In lieu of buying a whole new computer, I upgraded my hard drive to a bigger and better drive. I previously had a 40 GB 5400 rpm drive, but am now the proud owner of a zippy 100 GB 7200 rpm drive. Rather than do a complete new install, I decided (thanks Alex) to create a bootable copy of my old drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. It worked perfectly, and about 35 minutes after Bryan installed the hard drive in the laptop, I had a bootable copy of my old drive ready to roll. Much better than the hours of work it would have taken just to reinstall the OS, do system upgrades to 10.4.6, reinstall iLife, Photoshop CS2, and Office, not to mention everything else that fills my drive.
I must say that the new drive is much quieter than the old one, and while I haven’t had a chance to open a lot of giant files on it, the quicker speed of the drive also impacts the responsiveness of the computer. The 7200 rpm drive combined with 1 GB RAM makes this old machine feel almost new. Almost.
In addition, for the first time since 1999, all my music fits on my internal hard drive! I can actually port my entire music library around, as it doesn’t even all fit on my iPod. 19 GB of empty space left after importing the whole thing. If only I could get iTunes to stop mucking around with Adium, my life would be complete.
